Larry Levin, used to be one of the best surfers in Jbay during the ‘70s, with 35 years of Supertubes under the belt he got featured in many surfing magazines and as such could be found in the barrel quite often. Larry had the “Larry Lavine surf shop” in the Jeffreys Bay Magnatudes Trio building complex in the 80s’. Larry stopped surfing at about the age of 50 and is a builder in Jeffreys Bay for the past 20 years.
With little shaping experience he went to Australia where he lived for about two years. He crafted at the Shane surfboard factory and uplifted his skills in the shaping bay in the early ’70s. After his Australian adventure Larry moved to Jeffreys Bay in 1973, where he shaped boards from a garage of a family owned house in front of kitchen windows. He brought back a Glen Ritchie concave bottom pin tail board. This design was an inspiration to some of the shapers in South Africa.
The board displayed is a 1971 board and was about Larry’s 10th board that was shaped in Summerstrand PE in one of his friend's garages. The decal on the board is still the original hand-drawn logo. There is a little print on the top stating “Handcrafted by Larry Levin, Port Elizabeth”.
The board was found by Brandon Watson in a garage in PE, he sold it to Nina’s and now it is displayed as a part of the South African surfing culture.
